考虑入学率的问题是非常必要的，如果一所大学有很高的入学率，从一定程度上意味着该大学很受欢迎，学生有很强的动力入读。从表中可以看到美国最顶尖的几所大学的入学率也没有想象中的那么高，说明学生整体选择大学很理性地根据学校实际水平，不是一窝蜂地简单按照排名选大学。
每年当一群大学生已经被录取了，另一群大学生开始填写申请的时候，美国的大学就会计算出最终的招生结果——也就是大学实际入学率(yield rate)。因为很多学生在申请美国大学时，一般会申请5-10所，录取结果好的话，申请人能收到好几所大学的offer，但最后只能选择一所入读，怎么办?于是就有了实际入学率。如果说录取率是大学选学生，那入学率就是收到offer的学生选大学。可以说：实际入学率是评判学校是否受欢迎的一项重要指标。
